On Friday, February 23, The Open Book Project celebrated its official ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate their space at 213 E. 1st Avenue in downtown Easley. The festivities included an open house, food, beverages, and giveaways which the attendees enjoyed. The Open Book Project is a non-profit organization which was founded through a monthly book club. Samantha Jones discovered the Pickens Literacy Association (PCLA) had announced they were ceasing their work. She relayed this to her monthly book club where their love of reading and a love of giving made them form an Executive Committee and a Board of Directors. That came to be The Open Book Project and they now have a location to operate from at 213 E. 1st Avenue in downtown Easley This location will enable them to have a set of hours to sell books to fundraise for the literacy needs in the Upstate communities surrounding Piedmont, Powdersville, Easley, Clemson, Anderson, Pickens, & Greenville with all types of literacy initiatives. The Upstate Literacy Learning & Tutoring Center will also have an office inside the building to allow students to come in for help. The hours of operation will be announced later. Now, you can help their literacy initiative through numerous opportunities. As an individual, you can volunteer at their events or at their shoppe. As a business you can sign up to become a book drop off location to collect books. Books can be dropped off at The Open Book Project at their wooden drop off box placed by the entrance-door one of the locations near you. To view the drop-off locations, click here. Book donations must be new and gently used books excluding reference and textbooks.
